Launch of the European INTERREG RIVER-REST project in Seville, 13–16 October 2025
The E2lim laboratory, along with 11 other academic and non-academic partners from Spain, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland and France, is a recipient of a European INTERREG Atlantic Area project. This project will run until 2028 and has a budget of €2.24 million, of which €2.13 million is funded by the European Union.
RIVERS-REST responds to the urgent need to reduce the pollution that rivers discharge into the Atlantic Ocean, with serious consequences for the environment, the functionality and sustainability of the hydrological system, as well as on many sectors of the blue economy: from the navigability of rivers to the regeneration of beaches, which jeopardises tourism, and fishing activity, which is affected by the impacts on estuarine and marine biodiversity. The origin of these problems lies in the denaturation of rivers by urban and hydraulic development policies that are contrary to nature and obsolete in the context of climate change, as well as in agricultural practices that are unsuitable for preserving the functionality of the environment.
RIVERS-REST addresses these issues through demonstration projects aimed at testing new technical and governance solutions to reduce sediment and chemical pollutant runoff into rivers and the Atlantic Ocean, implementing nature restoration initiatives that test new approaches and techniques, and jointly develop planning methods and instruments capable of correcting these problems.
From 13 to 16 October, the project launch meeting took place over three days in Andalusia, in the Seville region. This meeting provided an opportunity for technical exchanges and visits to several demonstration sites in Andalusia. The joint programme secretariat, based in Porto, presented the programme’s operating rules.
