Highlights from ANF Opti-Bio: A Successful Synergistic Bridge Between Physics and Biology in Limoges

From October 6 to 8, Limoges hosted the National Training Action “Opti-Bio” (ANF Opti-Bio), dedicated to the fundamentals of physics and biology for microscopy and bio-imaging.

Supported by the CNRS ImaBio Research Network (GDR ImaBio), this national event highlighted a close interdisciplinary collaboration between the CRIBL laboratory, the BISCEm biotechnology platform, and the XLIM research institute.

An Interdisciplinary Alliance at the Heart of the Limoges Campus

The successful organization and rollout of this training action rested on the joint efforts of key technical and scientific staff across the campus:

  • From CRIBL and BISCEm: Claire Carrion (CRIBL and BISCEm), Christelle Oblet (CRIBL), Tiffany Marchiol (CRIBL and BISCEm), and Fabienne Baraige (BISCEm), who brought their extensive expertise in biology, complex sample preparation, and life sciences characterization.

  • From XLIM: Pierre Bon and Marc Fabert, expert researchers in optics and imaging physics.

This partnership illustrates the strength of the Limoges research ecosystem, which effectively mobilizes its research units (CRIBL, XLIM) and technology platforms (BISCEm) to deliver high-level national training programs.

Bridging the Cultural Gap: Physics vs. Biology

AfficheANF2026

The primary goal of ANF Opti-Bio was to bridge the cultural gap that often exists between biologists and physicists. Through combined theoretical lectures and practical workshops:

  • Non-physicists acquired essential concepts in optics, microscope operation, and the physical constraints of image acquisition.

  • Non-biologists gained firsthand insight into the complexity of biological systems, as well as the time, cost, and reproducibility constraints involved in biological sample preparation.

Fostering Interdisciplinary Projects

By helping participants better grasp the terminology, tools, and challenges of each other’s fields, ANF Opti-Bio laid a solid foundation for future collaborative research projects at the interface of physics and biology.

The CRIBL laboratory warmly congratulates Christelle Oblet, Claire Carrion, and the entire organizing team from BISCEm and XLIM on the remarkable success of this training initiative!
