Abstract:

Quality versus utility assessment in the era of artificial intelligence

With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in image processing and analysis, traditional methods of assessing image quality are being challenged by the need for task-specific utility evaluation. This talk explores the evolving relationship between image quality and utility in the AI era, addressing key questions: Does higher image quality always translate to better performance? How do AI-driven tasks redefine what constitutes a “good” image? We examine conventional image quality metrics, their limitations, and the emerging shift towards utility-based assessments that prioritize performance in downstream AI applications. Case studies from surveillance systems will illustrate how AI models can extract meaningful insights from seemingly low-quality images.
