Research interests

Florian Wolf is currently working in the field of radio signal based positioning systems. His research interests include theoretical performance modeling, signal processing, beamforming, system design and implementation for wireless sensor networks with positioning functionality.

Ph.D. thesis topic

Research is carried out at CEA-Leti Grenoble under the guidance of Sébastien de Rivaz and François Dehmas.
The Ph.D. thesis is prepared under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Cances and Vahid Meghdadi from XLIM Limoges.

Positioning functionality of long range and low power consumption IoT systems

A new generation of long range radio modules opens perspectives for the implementation of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN), often associated with the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Providing positioning information on these radio modules without the use of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), gives rise to new applications and improved network management while achieving low power and low cost requirements. However, obtaining metrics (e.g. Time of Arrival, ToA; Angle of Arrival, AoA; Received Signal Strength Indicator, RSSI) for accurate positioning is challenging due to hardware limitations and impairments (e.g. transmission bandwidth, clock drift, delays) and the propagation channel. The thesis aims to achieve a proof of feasibility for the positioning functionality in Low Power wide Area Networks.
